Where Are You?

1427 Church

Genesis 2:25; Genesis 3:1–15; Ephesians 2:10; 1 Corinthians 10:13; 2 Corinthians 9:8

Message: Where Are You? (Genesis 3)

The LORD is always sovereign and present, even in the midst of temptation; our greatest need is to remain close to Him and respond to His call, "Where are you?"

  • We began our journey through Genesis only 2 weeks ago, emphasizing God's goodness in creation.
  • Today we examine the fall and God's gracious response to humanity's disobedience.

Reading: Key Texts (CSB)

Genesis 2:25: "Both the man and his wife were naked, yet felt no shame."

Genesis 3:1: "Now the serpent was the most cunning of all the wild animals that the Lord God had made. He said to the woman, 'Did God really say, "You can't eat from any tree in the garden"?'"

Genesis 3:9: "So the Lord God called out to the man and said to him, 'Where are you?'"

Genesis 3:15: "I will put hostility between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring. He will strike your head, and you will strike his heel."

1) The LORD Has Always Been LORD

From Elohim to Yahweh Elohim

  • Genesis 1: Elohim (אֱלֹהִ֛ים) mentioned 35 times (7 × 5)—the transcendent Creator
  • Genesis 2: Yahweh Elohim (יְהוָ֧ה אֱלֹהִ֛ים)—the personal, relational God
  • The first time God's personal name appears in Scripture, revealing His intimate relationship with humanity

The Time of Innocence

Genesis 2:25: "Both the man and his wife were naked, yet felt no shame."

  • Before sin: innocence, no shame, perfect fellowship with God
  • After sin: awareness of nakedness, shame, hiding from God's presence
  • The LORD was LORD even in innocence—obedience was always required

Hebrew Wordplay: Naked and Crafty

  • Genesis 2:25: "naked" (עָר֔וּם) = innocence
  • Genesis 3:1: "crafty" (עֵירֹ֖ם) = cunning temptation
  • This wordplay signals the dramatic shift from innocence to temptation

2) Your Temptation is not a Surprise

The Serpent's Strategy

  • Satan uses only "elohim" (God), not "Yahweh Elohim" (the LORD God)
  • This omission should have alerted Eve—something was off
  • The serpent tells half-truths: eyes will be opened, knowledge gained—but omits the cost

Did She Have a Fighting Chance?

Yes. Eve had everything needed to resist:

Ephesians 2:10: "For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared ahead of time for us to do."

1 Corinthians 10:13: "No temptation has come upon you except what is common to humanity. But God is faithful; he will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation he will also provide the way out so that you may be able to bear it."

2 Corinthians 9:8: "And God is able to make every grace overflow to you, so that in every way, always having everything you need, you may excel in every good work."

What Winning Looks Like

  • Eve didn't need all the answers—she could have taken the serpent to the LORD
  • Sometimes winning means being weak and seeking God's strength
  • Eve sought her own power and knowledge instead of God's wisdom

3) Where Are You?

God's Movement and Presence

Genesis 3:8: "Then the man and his wife heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden at the time of the evening breeze, and they hid from the Lord God among the trees of the garden."

  • Adam and Eve knew God's movement intimately—they could hear, sense, distinguish, and discern His presence
  • Even in disobedience, they anticipated the LORD's nearness
  • We can know God's patterns and still disobey

The Question That Calls Us Home

Genesis 3:9: "So the Lord God called out to the man and said to him, 'Where are you?'"

Not "Where are you located?" but "Why are you not where you're supposed to be?"

  • Like asking children "Where are you?" when it's time to go—we know where they are, but they're not where they should be
  • This question calls us to examine our hearts and return to the LORD's presence
  • God questions Adam and Eve but not the serpent—there was no redemption available for Satan

The First Promise of Messiah

Genesis 3:15: "I will put hostility between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring. He will strike your head, and you will strike his heel."

  • The age of innocence ended, but hope remained
  • The first promise of the Messiah—the Savior who would defeat the serpent
  • Adam and Eve looked forward to His coming; we look back to His victory

Discussion & Application

  1. Where do you find yourself hiding from God's presence due to shame?
  2. How can you distinguish between God's voice and the enemy's voice in temptation?
  3. What does it mean for you that God provides a way out of every temptation?
  4. How does God's question "Where are you?" speak to your current spiritual condition?
  5. In what ways will you respond to God's call to return to fellowship with Him?

Prayer

Lord, thank You for Your gracious question, "Where are you?" Even when we hide in shame, You seek us out. Help us recognize Your voice above all others, trust Your provision in temptation, and return to Your presence. Thank You for the promise of Messiah—our Savior who defeated the serpent and restores our fellowship with You. Amen.
