Background
- Haggai’s ministry lasted just four months, but his message was powerful.
- The people returned from exile and began rebuilding the temple, but what they built seemed small and disappointing compared to the past.
- God’s people needed encouragement and a reminder of His presence and promises.
Main Points
1. Divine Shaking: Remembering God’s Promises
- God shakes up our lives not to harm us, but to sanctify us—reminding us of His presence and stripping away what is unholy.
- The process the people were experiencing is called sanctification: God making us more like Jesus.
- God’s Spirit is present among His people, just as He was in the days of the Tabernacle (Exodus 31:3).
Reflection:
- Where have you seen God “shake things up” in your life?
- How has God’s presence encouraged you in hard times?
2. What is Sanctification?
- Sanctification means to be set apart for God’s purpose.
- Three phases:
- Positional: God chooses you—you accept and belong to His family.
- Progressive: You grow, practice, and become more like Jesus.
- Ultimate: One day, God will make you perfect in His presence.
- Like being picked for a team, practicing, and finally celebrating the championship.
Reflection:
- Which phase of sanctification do you relate to most right now?
- How can you “practice” your faith this week?
3. God Shakes Us to Refocus Our Hearts
- God uses “divine shaking” to get our attention and draw us back to Him.
- Even when our efforts seem small, God promises to fill our lives with His glory and peace.
- Our stories of being “shaken” can encourage others and point them to God’s faithfulness.
Reflection:
- Where do you need to trust God’s promises instead of your own expectations?
- Who can you share your story with this week?
Gospel Connection
- God’s ultimate promise is fulfilled in Jesus, who sanctifies us and makes us God’s dwelling place.
- The shaking in our lives points us to our need for Jesus and His transforming power.
Discussion & Application
- When has God “shaken” your life to get your attention or help you grow?
- How can you respond to God’s presence and promises in your current season?
- What step can you take this week to share your faith or encourage someone else?
Prayer
Lord, thank You for being with us when life is shaken. Help us trust Your promises, grow in faith, and share Your love with others. Amen.
